Mexican Independence Day

Mexican Independence Day

The Independence day in Mexico is the most important holiday and a big celebration all over the country. It commemorates the beginning of the war against the Spaniards who had controlled the country for more than three centuries.

According to the history, the morning of September 16th, 1810 the catholic priest of Dolores (a small town in Mexico) Miguel Hidalgo ordered the church bells to be rung and gathered the people from the town and he addressed them in front of his church, encouraging them to revolt.

That is why every year on September 15th at night people gather outside the city hall in every town and city in Mexico to hear and cry the "Grito de Independencia" (Cry of Independence). All the streets are decorated with the flag colors and there are parties and festivals all over the month.

This is a video of the Grito de Independencia from two years ago when I was spending the Mexican holidays in La Piedad, my hometown.

This year is special because it has been 200 years from the beginning of the independence movement so the celebration has been bigger than ever not just on September but all over the year. That's why this Saturday we are going to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day too. Come to Recife to enjoy some mexican food, music and of course some tequila and mexican beer. It's time to party in Mexico so let's join them!!

Hope to see you there. VIVA MEXICO!!!.... VIVA!!
